How long should a Short be?

The honest answer: as long as it takes for the point to land. A fixed number of seconds is a poor yardstick. Here is how to recognize the right length.

Why a fixed number misleads

Search for the ideal length of Shorts, Reels or TikToks and you find numbers between 15 and 60 seconds. They sound concrete but only serve as orientation. Platforms change their limits and recommendations constantly, and no algorithm rewards a number of seconds in itself.

What platforms measure is behavior: do people watch to the end? Do they replay? Do they share? A clip that stops at 30 seconds before the thought is finished creates frustration, and it shows up in exactly those signals.

The payoff decides the end

Every good clip has an arc: a question or claim is opened, developed and resolved. The end is where the resolution is reached, not earlier and not later.

For an argument that is the conclusion, for an example the concrete case it points at, for a story the twist. If the clip stops at the setup, it feels like a trailer without a film.

  • Too short: the point is touched but not backed up
  • Right: claim, short reasoning, result
  • Too long: it continues after the payoff without anything new

Finding the right length in practice

A simple test helps: play the clip to someone who hasn’t seen the long video. Can they say in one sentence what the point was? Then the length is right.

  • Start at the beginning of a sentence, never mid-thought
  • Remove filler words, repetitions and pauses over about half a second
  • Cut right after the payoff, an afterthought dilutes it
  • As a rule of thumb many explainer clips land between 30 and 120 seconds, but the content decides

How ClipBro handles it

ClipBro selects passages by hook, tension, value and shareability and lets each clip run until its payoff. Length follows from the content, usually between 30 and 120 seconds. If a clip ends too early, give feedback such as “longer, until the payoff” and it is re-cut.
